1953 MSC Pony Backfield - Yewcic (41) |

Tom Yewcic will be honored at the 2013 Michigan State Baseball
First Pitch Dinner on Sunday, February 3, 2013. Yewcic was a two sport star at MSC, baseball and football. He quarterbacked the Spartans to an undefeated 1952 National Championship and a Rose Bowl victory in the 1953 season.
Yewcic played baseball for the 1957 Detroit Tigers and football for the 1961-66 Boston Patriots.
Yewcic had one of the more memorable debuts in Spartan history. Here was the play as described by Mervin Hyman in Big Ten Football:
Trailing 20-17, with just a few minutes remaning in the game, MSC quarterback Al Dorow pitched wide right back to Tom Yewcic as the entire Spartan team moved right to give Yewcic the big strength for a sweep. The entire team minus one went right with the tailback. The one exception was Dorow, who took off alone to the left and got behind the Ohio State secondary. Yewcic then stopped and passed long to Dorow who scored the winning touchdown easily.
